Indulgence

Indulgence

On the curing rack
Ready March 10th

Indulgence  is a lovely rich creamy bar, made with sweet almond oil, decadent cocoa butter, organic shea butter, goats milk, kaolin and silk. It has a beautiful complex and tenacious essential oil blend. Oh boy is it complex, 15 essential oils no less. OK so I went a bit overboard, but I am an essential oil addict. I  love to create new and exciting blends, offering something really unique and special. Creating layer after layer of scent.

This handmade soap was originally designed for an International Friendship Soap Swap. As part of the swap, we had to do a video also. Of course, myself being as tech savvy as I am, pressed the wrong button. Went through the whole process, talking away to myself, soaping away, thinking this isn't so bad (doing a video). That was of course until I tried to replay it, then there was nothing. Well, there wasn't a video but I did have a gorgeously scented fab soap. So, I had start again and do a different batch for the swap, I will post about that one soon.

The essential oil blend combines rich earthy notes (Indonesian Dark Patchouli) with fresh sweet citrus notes, layered with green, wood and floral accents also. It's truly divine. Indulgence got it's name purely because it is a very indulgent complex combination of essential oils.

This lovely decadent handmade soap is on the curing rack and will be ready on March 10th. Keep an eye out for announcement of when they will be added to www.libanireland.com website, as some have already been pre-ordered.

Silky Smooth Luxury Lip Balms - 20% OFF

Check out the fantastic special offer on our Silky Smooth Luxury Lip Balms. A whopping 20% for one week (ending 05/03/12) or while stocks last.

Depending on what you like in a lip balm, they can be quite easy to make. A % of wax, oils, hard and soft butters. But I have to say it became one of the most frustrating products I've made. It became an obsession way beyond obsessive.

My ideal lippy balm must have great glide, good creamy texture, offer the best emollient properties and protection but yet, be lightweight and definetly not sticky. Sticky is not good. Many a nights sleep was lost over achieving 'my perfect balm'. After lots of tweaking, changing a % here, a % there, much testing, probably driving my testers nuts, it all fell into place. And it was so worth it. After all, we wear it on our lips, it has to be 'just right'. It has to do it's job and be comfortable to wear.

Our Silky Smooth Luxury Lip Balms are formulated with a delightful combination of oils, butters and waxes for the ultimate experience. They have a gorgeous creamy texture, silky smooth glide and are light weight on the delicate are of the lips. No clumping, no stickiness or tacky sensation, just sheer delight to wear. Contains lots of decadent creamy cocoa butter, smooth emollient properties of babassu oil, sweet almond oil and organic jojoba oil. Also included is Aloe Butter for a calming and soothing factor and vitamin E. Combined with bees wax and candelilla wax to offer great protection and super soft conditioning.

Check out our website page and avail of your discount while stocks last.

Irish Soap Swap

Enjoying 'Vintage Patchouli' from www.iamhandmade.com .

We've been talking about doing an Irish soap swap for what seems like ages now, but never got round to it until recently. It's a little funny really, it's not like our wee country is that big and there's so many of us to do swaps. This was a small swap, myself (Rose) from www.libanireland.com , Celine from www.iamhandmade.com and Hajni from www.mianrasoaps.com .

Today I will be talking about Celine's 'Vintage Patchouli' from www.iamhandmade.com .
Celine is a very talented and artistic soaper. She has a very definite  and creative style, loves her colour and definetly loves a little sparkle. She is also the queen of fragrance oils, a total addict.

Vintage Patchouli has a lovely creamy texture, producing a rich creamy lather that works into masses of bubbles. The bar of handmade soap itself was a very generous size and had a lovely smooth creamy texture.

The scent is very unisex, well suited to men and women. I'm a Patchouli addict, I just love the rich earthy aroma so this is right up my street. When we were planning this swap, we didn't specify any particular soap. The sender sends what they think the recipient would like. I have to say Celine got this so right.

I will most definetly continue to enjoy using this bar over the next few weeks.

Celine's description of Vintage Patchouli: (courtesy of www.iamhandmade.com )
This lovely fragrance is a sensual blend of Patchouli Essential Oil, Bergamot & White Flowers on an intense base of woody incense; it's clean yet deep & dark, perfumed and mysterious - a fragrance that makes you think of long held secrets.

Hormones and the Skin

What are hormones? Hormones are chemicals that control many processes in the body. Getting and keeping them balanced is vital not just to be healthy and function optimally, but also for your skin. A typical hormonal imbalance is literally having too much of one and not enough of another. Like everything else in our body, hormones rely on the food that we eat. There are key milestones in our lives when we will experience hormonal fluctuations, such as puberty, PMS, pregnancy and menopause. Even through these times diet and lifestyle play a huge role in balancing these hormones thus allowing for clearer healthier skin.

How do hormones affect our skin? The skin can reflect hormonal imbalance in many ways. Acne flare-ups can be related to hormone imbalances. Post-menopausal dry skin can be caused by imbalances, as can eczema, pigmentation, rosacea and premature aging (wrinkles). Other symptoms such as hair growth, mood swings, bloating, depression, breast tenderness and irritability can be attributed to hormonal imbalance. Tearfulness, lack of energy, hair loss, sugar cravings, insomnia, vaginal dryness and weight gain may also factor.

How to improve hormone balance: balancing sugar levels in the blood is crucial. An adequate intake of essential fatty acids (omega 3&6) is imperative, as is increasing phytoestrogens (lentils, beans etc…).

Diet tips to balance hormones

Eat nuts and seeds (omega 3 & 6)

Eat organic meat & eggs

Eat as much organic fruit & vegetables as possible

Eat oily fish twice a week, salmon, trout, and kippers etc…, tuna – 1-2 times a month

Balance sugar levels

Increase intake of phytoestrogens

Reduce intake of animal fats, red meat, milk and dairy

Avoid stimulants – coffee, tea, smoking and alcohol

Eat a balanced diet and eat regularly

Avoid sugary snacks

Avoid refined foods

Lifestyle tips to balance hormones

Regular exercise is essential (15 minutes each day)

Reduce stress

Filter drinking water

Minimise exposure to soft plastics, known to disrupt hormones

Consult a nutritional therapist

Essential Fatty Acids & the Skin

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are vital for healthy skin. They help keep the skin plump and smooth. EFA’s boosts the skins immunity which helps fight bacterial infections, essential for acne skin types. They have excellent anti-inflammatory properties, beneficial to acne, eczema and other inflammatory conditions. EFA’s also have high fibre content which aids the elimination of toxins. This will create a healthier body and healthier skin. Remember, most skin conditions are caused by an imbalance in the body.

Common signs of EFA’s deficiency are:

  • Sensitive skin
  • Eczema
  • Dry hair
  • Rough skin
  • Scalp conditions e.g. Dandruff

Foods that provide Essential Fatty Acids

Nuts: Brazil, Almonds, Hazelnuts, Cashew nuts, Pistachio. These should be non-salted and non-roasted. For easier digestion and absorption these should be chewed really well.

Seeds: Flax seeds, Sunflower seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Sesame seeds. These need to be chewed well or can be ground up in a grinder and sprinkled over cereal.

Oily Fish: Salmon, Fresh Tuna, Mackerel, Herring, Sardines. (Excellent sources of EFA’s and protein without saturated fat.)

Some benefits of good intake of Essential Fatty Acids
  • Improved immunity
  • Detoxification
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Helps keep the skin looking plump, smooth and youthful
  • Improved memory
  • Beneficial effect on menopausal symptoms
  • Eases pre-menstrual tension
  • Aids in balancing hormones
  • Positive effect on moods
  • Aids toxin elimination through bowel rather than skin, allowing for clearer skin
  • Beneficial effect on joint problems and arthritis (anti-inflammatory)
  • Helps reduce LDL (bad cholesterol)
  • Essential for healthy heart
  • Improved skin, hair and nails

Healthy Lifestyle

So what exactly is a healthy lifestyle?

It equates to three principles – Healthy Eating, Exercise and Relaxation.

Healthy Eating

The Irish government has spent a lot of time trying to get the healthy eating message across to all sectors of the population. As a result, the campaign has introduced the food pyramid, which is now acknowledged and accepted as the national guide to healthy eating, and has enhanced public awareness on healthy eating guidelines on fruit and vegetables, fibre, low fat and being a healthy weight.

The Health Promotion Unit has run National Healthy Eating Campaigns for one decade. This campaign has been successful in creating and increasing public attention on healthy eating with 60% awareness of key healthy eating messages.

Recent research has indicated that of those people who were aware of the campaign, one in three was influenced to change their eating habits as a direct result, this proves that it is working as an easy to follow campaign.

The food pyramid is distributed through public health centers, doctors, hospitals, schools etc. in order to access as much of the population as possible.
I do think though our Governments should be looking at revisiting this model.

These statistic indicate it's working, the statistics from the health sector may differ. A lot of preventable disease's are on the increase. Is it not working anymore, have people stopped listening, is it flawed?

Healthy eating is essential for good health and radiant skin.
What you eat can either protect you or increase your chances of getting diseases like heart disease.

The Food PyramidThe key to healthy eating is to eat a wide variety of foods. Using the Food Pyramid as a guide will help make sure you get all the vitamins, minerals and goodness you need from your food. Choose most foods from the bottom two shelves, smaller amounts from the next two shelves and a very small amount from the top shelf.

Smart food strategies

· Eat breakfast - studies show that even in young healthy adults with reasonable diets, eating breakfast helps them to address a problem more creatively.

· Eat smaller meals - large meals can make you feel over full and tired.

· Avoid crash diets - very low energy diets can cause memory and attention problems and lead to poor reaction times.

· Keep well hydrated - drink water frequently throughout the day to help prevent dehydration.

Exercise
Following on from the success of the food pyramid, there is the exercise pyramid. People can feel overwhelmed when they are being told how much exercise they need to do, so the idea of the exercise pyramid is a quick reference guide, it puts the fun back into exercise and also show that some things you do routinely are actually counted as your overall exercise needs. The pyramid is based on some of the following research: The current recognised recommendation is that every adult should accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity most days of the week. However six out of ten Irish people do not take enough activity for health benefits. The lifestyle trend in Ireland was identified in the recent SLAN surveys, Which found that only 51% of the population reported engaged in some form of regular physical activity. In addition, obesity was identified as a growing problem, affecting 13% of the population and almost half the population reported as being overweight.

Exercise/Activity

Adults should aim to be physically active for at least a total of 30 minutes, each day of the week. Activity minutes can be accumulated, i.e. adults can be active 3 times a day for 10 minutes each time.

Children and teenagers should aim to be physically active for at least one hour, most days of the week. Children can also accumulate their activity minutes.

The benefits of regular physical activity are numerous:

Ø Better general health

Ø Reduces the risk of dying prematurely.

Ø Reduces the risk of dying from heart disease or stroke.

Ø Reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 50%.

Ø Promotes well-being and reduces feelings of stress and anxiety.

Ø Is excellent in helping to maintain a healthy weight.

Ø Improves mobility, at any age.

Ø Helps to reduce cholesterol levels.

Ø Helps prevent / reduce osteoporosis - reducing the risk of hip fracture by up to 50% in women.

Ø Exercise aids lymph flow, which will aid in the removal of toxins and excess fluid.

Fluid intake

Dehydration can lead to fatigue, impaired performance and can also be a threat to life. For this reason, anyone who exercises should make sure they have a good fluid intake. You should aim to drink a litre of fluid per hour of exercise.

Start well hydrated drink before exercise

Get well hydrated drink during exercise

Stay well hydrated drink after exercise

Relaxation
As life becomes busy and hectic, finding time to relax is difficult. Take at least 20 minutes a day for relaxation. Always plan your time to relax, otherwise it may not happen. Relaxation can be a few moments of quietness or simply enjoying a hobby or interest. There are many relaxation techniques for you to discover, see which one suits you best. Learn and practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques, walking is excellent, yoga, meditation, anything that has a positive effect on mind and body. Stress is a part of modern day life and occurs in all areas of our daily lives. Stress cannot be avoided but it can be managed.

Finally, I think lifestyle, accepting responsibility and taking control of of our lifestyles is more important now more than ever.
